The Birmingham Express & Star are reporting that Kevin Phillips is on the verge of leaving West Bromwich Albion for cross-city rivals Birmingham City:
Despite Phillips’ tremendous input last season, manager Tony Mowbray was not expecting the veteran striker to complete anything like the same workload in the Premiership, especially after his amazing recovery from a serious knee injury which he feared threatened his career earlier this year.
The Baggies still came up with a two-year deal in an effort to re-sign Phillips, who became such a hero on the Brummie Road End with his decisive goal contributions.
Chairman Jeremy Peace was prepared to pay him a first year based on Premiership rates – but the second year would be performance-related.
That is the sticking point for the Phillips camp and which provided the gap Blues are poised to exploit.
Meanwhile Forest look to be edging into the lead in the race to sign some up-and-coming striker called “Andrew Cole”. I’ve seen reports that they are willing to pay him £25,000 per week, which if true is bonkers.
Both strikers have been linked with moves to Carrow Road, so it looks as though it’s two more targets missed for Glenn Roeder – although you would think he would go for one or the other.
