Scunthorpe have confirmed that they have accepted a bid from Burnley for top scorer Martin Paterson.
The Clarets have got the best part of £3m (how much??) burning a hole in their back pocket after the sale of Kyle Lafferty to Rangers, but you can’t help but chuckle at the timing and the wording here.
It’s not really the norm these days for clubs to publicly confirm the amount of the bid before the deal has been completed unless you’re doing it for one of two reasons:
1. You know you’re going to face a backlash from supporters angry at the sale of one your prized assets, but you want to try and placate them by saying “yes, but look at all this gold we’ve got”.
2. You’re trying to flush out any other would-be suitors by effectively saying “this is what it’ll cost you – up for it?”.
I wonder which one this could be? Hmmm…so Glenn this is what it’ll cost you to get in the game – up for it?
