Southampton to close parts of St Marys next season

Southampton have announced that they intend to close three of the four corners of St Marys next season to cut costs. From saintsfc.co.uk:

Saints will be closing three of the four corners of the stadium for home games next season. This will affect Blocks 1-3, 12-14, 36-39.

Club staff have been looking for ways of reducing the match day costs as gates have declined, and this route was chosen over other more radical options, such as closing a complete stand.

The only quadrant to remain open will be the Chapel/Kingsland, which houses the JSaints and family sections.

The closures will impact around 700 fans who have already bought season tickets in the corners and who regrettably, will now be asked to move.

The decision is part of a package of cutbacks enforced by the Club’s current financial situation.

Makes you appreciate the 20,000 season ticket holders even more doesn’t it?

  1. My Mum always used to say to me “There’s always someone worse off than you”. When it comes to Southampton, there aren’t many more worse off than they are!

I’m surprised, though, that this lack of funds has not yet been exploited. I’d love to see Andrew Surman and Gregor Rasiak as Norwich players next season. Rasiak would be available very cheaply, I suspect and Surman would cost a bit but represents a great asset. I can see someone like West Brom snapping him up to replace Gera.

Still, a big shame for a club with such a proud a history as Southamptons to be in such dire straights. You have to fear for them next season.

  2. It is an awful time for them. Think they have a number of players unsure of their future as well – basically a case of whether the club can afford to have them. Throw in the fact they have an unknown Dutch coach who knows nothing about this league – and I think it is safe to say they will struggle next year. Maybe even more than us!
