A morale-boosting 2-0 win over Burnley at Carrow Road was the best possible start in a crucial month.
Dion Dublin opened the scoring after 2 minutes and countless finger nails were no doubt devoured before Ched Evans sealed the win in the 90th minute.
Next up was the East Anglian Derby at Portman Road. Evans fired City into a 4th minute lead only for Alex Pearce’s own goal to level matters nine minutes later and Danny Haynes grabbed what proved to be the winner for Ipswich before half-time. In truth Town could and probably should have won by more, so it was back to the drawing board for the home clash with West Brom a week later.
The expectation was always that it would come down to the QPR game, and was proven to be the case after West Brom won 2-1 at Carrow Road.
Robert Koren looked to kick the ball out of David Marshall’s hands for the first but the Scots’ appears fell on deaf ears. Zoltan Gera doubled the lead for the Baggies with less than twenty minutes to go and although Evans’ penalty gave City a lifeline a couple of minutes West Brom held on to leave them on the brink of the Premier League.
City’s last home game of the season also welcomed the biggest crowd of the campaign – 25,497 – and saw Dion Dublin pick up the Player of the Season award before the Canaries were given the best start possible when Damion Stewart was red-carded after only five minutes and Ched Evans scored just two minutes later.
When Mark Fotheringham scored on 56 minutes the points were in the bag and Darel Russell’s 83rd minute third was the icing on the cake as City finally confirmed their place in the Coca-Cola Championship.
The final game of the season saw City travel to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday – themselves still not quite safe from the threat of relegation.
Owls fans needn’t have worried though as the Canaries failed to build on Darren Huckerby’s 9th minute opener and duly rolled over and allowed Wednesday to romp to a 4-1 victory.
Not exactly the best way signal the end of Dion Dublin’s career, but we were already safe and that was the most important thing.
