Sheffield Wednesday vs. Coventry City: What result would best suit the Canaries?

There’s a massive game at Hillsborough tonight as Sheffield Wednesday (22nd) host Coventry City (18th). Both sides desperately need the points to claw themselves out of the relegation mire but which result would best suit the Canaries

The Owls have two games in hand over most of their relegation rivals, but the pressure will be on to ensure they make the most of their home-field advantage against a Sky Blues side who themselves have a game in hand on most of the teams around them.

Bottom of the Championship table should Wednesday win tonight:

  1. Blackpool (50pts)
  2. Norwich (49pts)
  3. Sheff Wed (48pts)
  4. Coventry (48pts)
  5. Leicester (47pts)
  6. Barnsley (46pts)
  7. Southampton (46pts)
  8. Scunthorpe (38pts)
  9. Colchester (33pts)

Bottom of the Championship table should Coventry win tonight:

  1. Coventry (51pts)
  2. Blackpool (50pts)
  3. Norwich (49pts)
  4. Leicester (47pts)
  5. Barnsley (46pts)
  6. Southampton (46pts)
  7. Sheff Wed (45pts)
  8. Scunthorpe (38pts)
  9. Colchester (33pts)

Bottom of the Championship table should the match be drawn tonight:

  1. Blackpool (50pts)
  2. Norwich (49pts)
  3. Coventry (49pts)
  4. Leicester (47pts)
  5. Barnsley (46pts)
  6. Sheff Wed (46pts)
  7. Southampton (46pts)
  8. Scunthorpe (38pts)
  9. Colchester (33pts)

Looking at that little lot it’s hard to say what I’d prefer. A win for Wednesday would see them leapfrog Coventry and move to within a point of us still with a game in hand – albeit the derby away to Sheffield United – and leave the Sky Blues still deep in trouble with a tricky trip to Vicarage Road to look forward to at the weekend.

A win for Coventry would lift them above Blackpool into 16th, and within three points of the 54 point target set by manager Chris Coleman. It would also ensure Wednesday remained in the relegation zone and maintain that four point gap between ourselves and the drop zone.

A draw would bring everybody that little bit closer together but at the same time ensure that two teams didn’t take maximum points from one of their games in hand. Looking at the fixtures both sides have left you would think they both have this one down as a “must-win”, so if for that reason alone I think a draw would probably suit us best.

Cue a 6-0 drubbing one way or the other…
