Less than 48 hours to go in the transfer window and things look like they might finally be about to go into overdrive. This morning’s Daily Mirror says that Birmingham have won the race to sign Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill with Bolton turning their attention back to Croatia defender Marko Babic of Real Betis, who apparently want an increase on the £2.2m offer already on the table.
After last night’s 1-0 win at Southampton, Glenn Roeder was quoted as saying he expected to announce two signings “definitely” on Thursday with the possible addition of one or two others. Maybe.
Ignoring the fact that we have kind of heard this before, who are the two, three or four players who could be coming in?
Well if the Mirror’s story is right then one of them might finally be Martin Taylor. If I had £1 for every time I’ve thought it was finally going to get done we’d have had this £250k “shortfall” by now, but given that it was only yesterday Roeder thought that highly unlikely for now I’d put Taylor in the “maybe” category.
I reckon Martin Paterson could be one in the “definitely” camp, as will one of Arsene Wenger‘s kids – either Armand Traore, Kieran Gibbs, Mark Randall or A N Other.
Which leaves one. If you read Ferret’s columns over on Rick Waghorn’s site you’ll probably know all about Valencia‘s Stephen ‘Sunny’ Sunday. I’m not going to go over everything that he’s already covered (if you haven’t read it then they’re usually pretty entertaining reads), I just don’t think a 19-year old Spanish ‘wonderkid’ is particularly likely to wind up in Norfolk any time soon.
So I think the fourth (if indeed there is a fourth) will be another young Gunner. The only thing we can say for sure is that by this time on Friday we’ll all know one way or another.
