Come on then, hands up who saw that coming. No-one? Nobody? Me neither. ‘King Kev’ is back on Tyneside.

The Geordies are absolutely delighted that their “messiah” has come home, but is it a good move?

The case for the prosecution (or why Keegan returning to Newcastle is a bad move).

A cynic would call this appointment a PR stunt, a move designed by owner Mike Ashley to appease the fans who never took to Sam Allardyce. Newcastle fans apparently crave the free-flowing football which was a signature of Keegan’s first reign but is that enough?

Football fans (and those of Newcastle United in particular) have very short memories. Not so long ago it wasn’t “sexy football” as Ruud Gullit called it that the Toon wanted. They wanted silverware, they wanted success – 39 years is a long time to not win a trophy.
