Who the Iliev is Valentin?

Valentin IlievHere’s what we know. Valentin Iliev is a 27 year old Bulgarian centre-half, the current captain of league leaders CSKA Sofia oh and rumoured to be in Norfolk on the verge of completing a £700k switch to the Canaries.

We also know he scored a belting goal in the Champions League against Liverpool a couple of years ago (see below) and came very close to joining Watford last year but had a change of heart at the last minute. That’s about it. Not even Wikipedia has much more than that (unless you’re interested to know that his Dad used to be an international goalkeeper).

We definitely need two new defenders, but I assumed we would be going all out for Martin Taylor and then possibly adding a right back as cover for Jon Otsemobor.

I think it’s fair to assume we are still after Taylor, so if both deals go through it could mean trouble for Jason Shackell.

In recent weeks Shackell’s fall from grace and the subsequent rise of Gary Doherty have been nothing short of mystifying.

Shackell started the season as captain and ‘Ginger Pele’ would usually be found wrapped around his man about 20 yards from goal, but a string of distinctly averages displays and a new manager saw the captaincy handed to Mark Fotheringham, and some impressive performances from Doherty since his return from injury now mean that if you were to drop one the smart money would be on the former skipper.

Whilst you are pondering that, check out that goal Iliev hit against Liverpool. Not bad for a defender…
