FA Cup Giant-Killings: Part One

The FA CupThis coming weekend is one of the most anticipated of the football calendar – FA Cup Third Round weekend.

I love the FA Cup. No other weekend this season will generate as much excitement up and down the country as we will experience in the coming days.

While it may be true that since the arrival of the Champions League, ‘giant-killings’ so often associated with the competition are unfortunately fewer and farther between, and only once since 1992 have one of the ‘big four’ not lifted the trophy (Everton in 1995), but to me that just makes the upsets more memorable when they do happen.

Saturday 7th January 1989. Sutton United 2 Coventry City 1.

The first giant-killing I can remember was back in 1989 when I was a wee lad of 9. Sutton United shocked the world by beating Coventry City in the third round. It was the last time a non-league club knocked out a top-flight side, and the day I fell in love with the FA Cup.

Highlights part one (the quality isn’t that great):
