15-15. Things just got even more interesting.

30 06 2008

So, Peter Cullum wants to plough £20m into the Canaries. Almost immediately the questions started – but not the questions that the EDP asked – people asked sensible questions like “how would that work then?”, and pointed out the possible complexities.

Have we found our latest and greatest saviour? Not yet, and not for £20m according to the official club statement which appeared on canaries.co.uk earlier this evening.

There’s clearly some pretty public posturing going on, and I have to say I kind of like the stance taken by the club here. Cullum’s statement of intent has understandably whipped up a bit of a storm with supporters, but the club appear to be saying something along the lines of “ok big boy, if you want to play it’s going to cost you £56m – and that goes for anyone else interested as well”.

It looks very much like “money where your mouth is” time, so come on Mr. Cullum. If you’re serious cough up the dough. You won’t regret it. :)

Albrechtsen leaves West Brom for Derby

30 06 2008

West Brom defender Martin Albrechtsen has agreed to sign for Derby County, according to BBC Radio Derby.

It was thought that the 28-year old Danish international was on Glenn Roeder’s list of targets for the coming season, but he has seemingly decided that his future lies in the sunny chimes of Derby. Rams boss Paul Jewell:

A deal has been agreed. He’s a Bosman and a good signing for us. He can play at right-back and at left-back, he has good pace and he will give us even more competition for the centre-half position.

Oh well, another one bites the dust.

Week in Review: Featuring Euro 2008, Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley, Manchester United, Newcastle United, the Web Awards and more…

29 06 2008

Here’s everything that happened on City ‘Til I Die this week:

Monday 23rd June 2008: Thomas Rooney ran the rule over the Euro 2008 semi-finalists.

Tuesday 24th June 2008: On Tuesday we remembered a classic Sheffield Wednesday kit, learnt that Burnley still want Darel Russell and looked forward to the unveiling of City’s new away kit by taking a peek at CarrowRoad.net’s idea.

Wednesday 25th June 2008: On Wednesday we marvelled at the new kit and heard talk of Alan Gow joining from Rangers.

Thursday 26th June 2008: On Thursday Reading were linked with a move for long-time City target David Bell, and we finally, finally signed Wes Hoolahan from Blackpool, with Matty Gilks going the other way.

Friday 27th June 2008: Friday was a day of reminiscing. First we looked back at Ipswich’s 9-0 mauling at Old Trafford, and then looked back at a classic Newcastle kit from the mid-nineties.

Saturday 28th June 2008: On Saturday Thomas Rooney declared his relief that the Canaries had managed to bag Wes Hoolahan, but wondered who the next player through the doors at Colney would be. Saturday was also the day that voting in the NCFC on the Web Awards begun, with the Best Messageboard award.

Sunday 29th June 2008: We finished off the week with the vote for Best News Service, and looked forward to the pending announcement regarding new investment in our fine club.

Goodnight, bring on the morning. :)

New investment on the way?

29 06 2008

The Pink’un have got everyone all of a flutter since this appeared at around lunchtime today:

The EDP will tomorrow (Monday) exclusively reveal sensational news about Norwich City Football Club.

In a story that will shock fans and intrigue rivals, the paper will lift the lid on potential investment which could equip the Canaries for a genuine challenge for promotion to the Premier League.

Don’t forget to buy a copy of tomorrow’s paper to read the story everybody will be talking about.

One website seems particularly displeased, as only this week they asked if new investment had been found. They also had this to say:

I hope that one City web site may like to apologise to us here at carrowroad for the ridicule they gave us, instead of trying to be the self appointed City sites critic.

I’m assuming they’re talking about this shiny blog, the NCFC on the Web Awards that I kicked off and more specifically, this post.

If so, using the word “cough” was probably a little mischievous but I don’t really think it can be classed as ridicule, do you?

As for being the self-appointed City site’s critic, well, if thinking it might be fun to give people a chance to vote on their favourite sites make me that then I’m guilty as charged.

The beauty of the web is that everyone who uses it is automatically a critic. If you like a particular site you’ll go back there again. If you don’t, you make your choice and you don’t. Pretty simple really.

But anyway, if this “new investment” turns out to be eerily similar to that predicted by one City website (which I’ve not been able to find unfortunately – send me a link and I’ll take a look), I’ll gladly hold my hands up and apologise.

Of course it could be that they didn’t mean this site at all, in which case I owe one City website an apology anyway. :)

UPDATE: Ok so it turns out it wasn’t aimed at me. As you were. :)

Very happy with Hoolahan…now who’s next?

28 06 2008

by Thomas Rooney

First things first – I am very pleased that we have finally captured the signature of Wes Hoolahan from Blackpool. We have been linked with him all summer and it feels good to actually get someone that we are constantly rumoured to be after – good work Glenn.

The best thing about this transfer though is that it will certainly not go unnoticed by the rest of the Championship clubs. Hoolahan had a fantastic season for Blackpool last year and was their stand out player against many teams. A quick browse through opposition’s message boards will tell you that. The price we have got him for – £250k plus a goalkeeper who never played for us – is a bargain. I look forward to seeing him flying down that left wing in the style of a certain Mr Huckerby. I’m aware that they are different types of players, but hopefully he can make a similar impact as Hucks – that would definitely be money well spent. No pressure Wesley…..

I mentioned the goalkeeper we have let go to Blackpool as part of the deal – Matthew Gilks. From what I saw of him in the reserves, he looked a solid keeper. As much as it would have been nice to keep him, you can’t deny the lad first team football and good luck to him. Two things pop in my head when considering all this though – didn’t Hoolahan have a release clause of £250k? If so, why did we have to give Blackpool our reserve keeper as well? Perhaps there was plenty of other clubs interested and Gilks was the deal breaker for Blackpool to allow him to come to us – who knows.

The second thing is – why would any keeper want to join us? We have recently let two talented keepers (Gilks and Lewis) leave the club without playing a game for us. Hardly an advert for coming to Carrow Road as a reserve keeper is it? It will be interesting to see who we get in as another keeper, if we do at all. With Declan Rudd set to sign a professional contract, perhaps he will be David Marshall’s reserve?

Anyway, back to the transfer situation. As far as football betting goes, I think it is safe to say that Hoolahan isn’t the last of the signings. He joins Sammy Clingan as the players who have joined this summer and I would expect another 4 permanent signings before the season starts. Then it may have to be another 4 or 5 loans to complete the squad. Of course, this all depends on the ‘investment’ we are rumoured to be getting. I’m not really prepared to comment on this, but I do think we have more money available than the club is letting on.

So who will these four permanent signings be? Well, we need a centre back (Gorkss from Blackpool), we need a striker (Andy Cole), we need another midfielder (Bell or Gow?) and a goalkeeper (anyone’s guess). This is what we need at the very least. Other players linked include Ameobi, Albrechtsen, SIbierski and Dos Santos – all players I would be very happy with. We are slowly putting together a stronger squad. Admittedly, I thought that last summer – but this time I really mean it. In terms of players linked with us, here is my ideal line up for the start of next season:

Marshall

Otsemobor Gorkss Shackell Drury

Chadwick Fozzy Clingan Hoolahan

Sibierski Cureton

Of course, this is very much subject to change. The likes of Bell, Albrechtsen, Gow and Cole would all fancy a start if they were to sign. Then you have the loan signings – with possibly Bertrand and Super Ched returning – and it does show the type of squad we can put together.

I expect the next week to be very busy on the transfer front and it could be an exciting few days to be a Norwich fan. The constant rumours are enjoyable and speculation provides much discussion, but it is time for that all to stop. Things are starting to happen now. Maybe, the fact that Hoolahan hasn’t been officially unveiled yet is because Roeder is waiting on three or four others to ‘present to the press’ all at once? Now that would be rather exciting. It could just mean, of course, that Hoolahan is on holiday – but I like my theory better. I guess we will have to just wait and see.

Memorable Football Kits: Newcastle United 1995-97

27 06 2008

Newcastle United kit 1995-1997

In the mid-nineties Newcastle United were a lot of people’s second team due to the sort of attacking football introduced by Kevin Keegan, and this is definitely one of my favourite kits of the time. Granted you can’t really go too wrong with black and white stripes, but even so.

I posted a video of Manchester United spanking Ipswich earlier, so it’s only fair that we even it out…

And who could forget this?

Have we signed anyone else yet?

Canary Classics: Manchester United 9 Ipswich Town 0

27 06 2008

Yes I know what you’re thinking – how can a game which doesn’t feature the Canaries be classed as a “Canary Classic”? I think we all know the answer to that one.

The date was Saturday 4th March 1995. The place, Old Trafford. Enjoy…
