Premier League Championship Poll Results: Manchester United or Chelsea?

10 05 2008

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Manchester United came out on top in the Premier League Championship poll, but it was closer than I thought it was going to be…

Who is going to win the Premier League?

Manchester United – 60%

Chelsea – 40%

By this time tomorrow, we’ll all know for sure!

I’ll leave the relegation poll open until tomorrow morning, as that’s a lot closer.

Who will our “new heroes” be? Let me be the first to start speculating wildly…

10 05 2008

Glenn’s got my attention with his “new heroes” bit, and God knows we need some. ‘Tis the season when speculation runs wild, but I don’t see why I should be the person to ruin that so here’s a quick list of 10 players I wouldn’t be devastated to see at the club next season (either on loan or signed permanently), in no particular order:

  1. Ched Evans (Manchester City).
  2. Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea).
  3. Maceo Rigters (Blackburn Rovers).
  4. Martin Taylor (Birmingham City).
  5. Peter Ramage (Newcastle United, now released).
  6. Wes Hoolahan.
  7. Jack Cork.
  8. Martin Paterson.
  9. Freddy Eastwood.
  10. Kevin Phillips.

I think individually they are all realistic targets, but I’d obviously be very surprised (and extremely happy) with me ended up with all that lot.

Let me know what you think…

Oh and incidentally, if anyone can do me a “Heroes” wallpaper featuring selected members of our (new) first team squad for next season, that would be very nice indeed. :)

So not only does Sven get Manchester City into the top 10, it looks like a Uefa Cup place is their’s as well…

10 05 2008

It has been announced that Uefa are to hand England an extra place in the Uefa Cup next season as we have once again topped the Fair Play League.

And who stands to benefit from this good news? Manchester City. Makes you wonder what on earth Sven would have to do to keep his board happy doesn’t it?

UPDATE: Perhaps not losing 8-1 at Middlesbrough would have been an idea.

Premier League Relegation Poll: Birmingham City, Fulham, Reading or Bolton Wanderers?

10 05 2008

Apparently there’s some sort of big weekend going on in the Premier League (the one that gets all the money and is on the telly all the time), but there are a couple of pretty important issues still to be resolved.

One of them is the relegation battle. Two places are still up for grabs with Birmingham, Fulham, Reading and Bolton all trying to scramble their way to freedom.

Bolton are pretty much safe barring a string of incredible results (it could happen), but which team do you think is most likely to be for the drop?

You can have your say on that here (just vote for the team you think are most likely well and truly stuffed – the two teams with the least votes will be our relegation favourites).

Poll: Which team is most likely for the drop?

Voting will close tomorrow evening, as soon as I remember to disable the links. )

UPDATE: I decided to split this and the championship poll into two different posts, just to make them easier to follow. You can vote in the relegation poll by clicking here.

Championship Play-Off First Leg Preview: Crystal Palace v Bristol City

10 05 2008

The first leg of the Coca-Cola Championship Play-Offs take place this weekend, and first up is Palace against Bristol City at Selhurst Park.

Both clubs surpassed expectation to reach the play-offs, but the Robins spent much of the year in the top two so to ultimately miss out on automatic promotion is bound to leave them feeling a little disappointed.

Palace boss Neil Warnock:

Although the games are classed as play-offs, we will approach them as league games. It’ll just be a normal week for us to be honest.

It’s all about whatever happens on the day – it could be a lucky break or a bit of individual brilliance that wins the game. But that’s what makes the play-offs so great.

It’s in the final where it becomes more of a theatre of dreams because of where it is and what’s at stake.

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson:

I am really looking forward to it. Neil Warnock has had a great run of form to get into the Play-Offs. They’re one of the form teams but it was always going to be a difficult two legs, whoever we were to play.

It is important that the players feel good about going into the play-offs. The players weren’t worried about who we would play, we’re the fourth best team in the Championship. That’s a superb achievement.

A few facts…

Final League Position: Crystal Palace 5th, Bristol City 4th.

Last Time at Selhurst Park: 19th January 2008 – Crystal Palace 2 Bristol City 0.

Top Goalscorer: Crystal Palace – Morrison (16), Bristol City – Byfield (8).

My Prediction: The Robins narrowly edged out Palace to be named as play-off favourites in the poll, but I think home advantage will give the Eagles the edge in the first leg. Crystal Palace 2 Bristol City 1.
