Wanna see into the future? All you need are two 13 year-old boys and a copy of Championship Manager…

Look into the future

A couple of kids have apparently ‘hacked’ Championship Manager to make it even more realistic. It’s pretty accurate by all accounts and sounded almost too good to be true - and then I remembered what the date was.

So what do you think - genius/nerd kids or April Fool?

Sheffield Wednesday vs. Coventry City: What result would best suit the Canaries?

1 04 2008

Sheff Wed V CoventryThere’s a massive game at Hillsborough tonight as Sheffield Wednesday (22nd) host Coventry City (18th). Both sides desperately need the points to claw themselves out of the relegation mire but which result would best suit the Canaries

The Owls have two games in hand over most of their relegation rivals, but the pressure will be on to ensure they make the most of their home-field advantage against a Sky Blues side who themselves have a game in hand on most of the teams around them.

Bottom of the Championship table should Wednesday win tonight:

  1. Blackpool (50pts)
  2. Norwich (49pts)
  3. Sheff Wed (48pts)
  4. Coventry (48pts)
  5. Leicester (47pts)
  6. Barnsley (46pts)
  7. Southampton (46pts)
  8. Scunthorpe (38pts)
  9. Colchester (33pts)

Bottom of the Championship table should Coventry win tonight:

  1. Coventry (51pts)
  2. Blackpool (50pts)
  3. Norwich (49pts)
  4. Leicester (47pts)
  5. Barnsley (46pts)
  6. Southampton (46pts)
  7. Sheff Wed (45pts)
  8. Scunthorpe (38pts)
  9. Colchester (33pts)

Bottom of the Championship table should the match be drawn tonight:

  1. Blackpool (50pts)
  2. Norwich (49pts)
  3. Coventry (49pts)
  4. Leicester (47pts)
  5. Barnsley (46pts)
  6. Sheff Wed (46pts)
  7. Southampton (46pts)
  8. Scunthorpe (38pts)
  9. Colchester (33pts)

Looking at that little lot it’s hard to say what I’d prefer. A win for Wednesday would see them leapfrog Coventry and move to within a point of us still with a game in hand - albeit the derby away to Sheffield United - and leave the Sky Blues still deep in trouble with a tricky trip to Vicarage Road to look forward to at the weekend.

A win for Coventry would lift them above Blackpool into 16th, and within three points of the 54 point target set by manager Chris Coleman. It would also ensure Wednesday remained in the relegation zone and maintain that four point gap between ourselves and the drop zone.

A draw would bring everybody that little bit closer together but at the same time ensure that two teams didn’t take maximum points from one of their games in hand. Looking at the fixtures both sides have left you would think they both have this one down as a “must-win”, so if for that reason alone I think a draw would probably suit us best.

Cue a 6-0 drubbing one way or the other…

Champions League Quarter-Final (First Leg) Predictions

1 04 2008
Champions League Trophy

It’s time to turn our attention away from the basement battle in the Championship for a moment and take a look at the Champions League Quarter-Finals.

Four English teams make up last eight this season which is a real achievement and we already know that at least one side will make the semi-finals, but how will the first legs go?

As is the norm I’ve made a few predictions (which will probably put the knackers on them all)…

Roma vs. Manchester United (Tuesday). These two clubs always seem to be drawn together so there was a real air of inevitability when they were paired this year as well. With a bit of luck all of the attention will be centred on activities taking place on the field this year though, where I expect United’s strong attack-minded players to take an away goal back to Old Trafford. My prediction: Roma 1 Man Utd 1.

Schalke 04 vs. Barcelona (Tuesday).Barcelona are overwhelming favourites for this one, which will suit the Germans just fine. Over two legs I’d back Barca to progress, but Schalke will give them a real battle. My prediction: Schalke 2 Barca 1.

Arsenal vs. Liverpool (Wednesday). It’s the game we’ve all been waiting for. The Gunners’ comeback against Bolton at the weekend was vital to restore some confidence after a few disappointing results. For some reason Liverpool always play better in Europe than the Premier League so I’m really looking forward to this one. My prediction: Arsenal 1 Liverpool 0.

Fenerbahce vs. Chelsea (Wednesday). The Turks will need to capitalize on their home form if they are to progress, but I think Chelsea’s tight defence will hold firm. Coupled with the fact that Chelsea are notoriously dull in Europe - and away from home in particular - I can only see this game going one way. My prediction: Fenerbahce 0 Chelsea 0.
